A photo exhibition opens today in Yerevan with the aim to raise public attention about the issue of persons missing as a result of armed conflicts or internal violence. The exhibition features photos from conflict areas throughout the world, and also shows families of persons unaccounted for in relation to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
"Helping reunify family members separated due to conflict or returning mortal remains has been a constant focus of the ICRC delegations in Yerevan and Baku as well as the ICRC mission in Nagorno Karabakh", says Yves Arnoldy, Head of the ICRC delegation in Armenia. "To this day, there remain nearly 4,300 missing persons in relation to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict whose fate is unresolved and whose families therefore live in the anguish of uncertainty. We hope that this exhibition will create better understanding amongst the population that this issue affects people on all sides and needs to be addressed".
Since 1992, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been working on the issue of the missing in relation to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, helping the authorities to search for information and answers to transmit to the families. "However, the responsibility to clarify the issue of missing persons remains with the authorities and results will obviously depend on the political will of all parties to drive this process forward", says Yves Arnoldy.
The exhibition is organised by the ICRC at the "Academia" gallery, 24, Bagramyan Avenue and will run daily until July 6 (except July 1) from 10 am to 6 pm.

The Yerkir Union of NGOs initiated and funds the expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Armenian Academy of Sciences to Artsakh which resumed on May 18, 2007 the excavations of Tigranakert, a town founded by the Armenian King Tigran the Great in the first century BC in Artsakh. The expedition is led by Dr. Hamlet Petrosyan.
On the first days of the excavations on the left bank of the Khachen River, the mountain near the village of Nor Maragha, the archeologists discovered a fragment of the 3.5 meters wide wall, built of large pieces of stone, the gate of the fortress and the remains of the tower built on the edge of the rock. The length of the wall is 20 meters. The archeologists suggest that the fortress had been built earlier than the town funded by Tigran Great, possibly in the period of the Kingdom of Urartu (8-7 centuries BC) or under the Armenian Yervanduni kings (6-4 centuries BC).
This year the excavations of Tigranakert will last until August 15.
The project of historical and archeological study of Tigranakert was launched by the Yerkir Union in 2005. In the first year of the project the exact location of the town was discovered, in 2006 the archeologists started digging in different parts of the town and around the town, revealing part of the wall of the citadel, part of a dam and part of the central town with remains of an early Christian basilica.

New York–based James Tufenkian started his business with a simple plan: design beautiful carpets using ancient Tibetan weaving techniques. In the 20 years since he founded Tufenkian Artisan Carpets, he has built a multimillion-dollar corporate, philanthropic, and now tourism empire that employs 4,000 local artisans and craftspeople in Nepal and more than 1,000 in Armenia and that continues to have a profound influence on the economies of both countries. In Nepal, the non profit arm of the company has implemented worker-welfare programs, providing schools, housing, medical facilities, and a water-purification plant for workers. After the fall of Communism in Armenia in 1993, Tufenkian returned to his ancestral homeland and helped resuscitate the traditional art of carpet weaving, to build an economic engine for the developing nation. Today, the company has set its sights on tourism and is intent on creating an infrastructure in Armenia to introduce the country to the world. Tufenkian has already built three hotels in the Armenian countryside; he is constructing four more that showcase the design and craftsmanship of local artisans.
Introduction to “Dilijan Museum Renovation” Investment Project
According to 2004 July 8th RA Government resolution, Tufenkian Hospitality Ltd started implementing “Dilijan Museum renovation” investment project.
I.Project Vision. Two of the favourite activities of international tourists are tasting traditional dishes and shopping for arts and crafts. When these two activities are presented in a historic setting, as has been done in the “Old Towns” of major cities in Europe and the United States, the success is overwhelming. Therefore Tufenkian Hospitality is planning to restore Dilijan as one of the premier destinations for both local and foreign tourists, by developing the historic Sharambeyan Street which will provide an authentic shopping and eating experience, and will allow the Armenian craftsmen to create their art work and sell it in the only historic setting in the country. The goal of the project is to make Dilijan the one location outside of Yerevan that will be visited by every tour group coming to the country, revive the economy of Dilijan and to stimulate employment in the crafts sector of the country.
II.Development Plan. Investments have already been made for restoration of the existing structures in historic style in Dilijan. Additionally a Tufenkian Heritage Hotel with about 40 rooms and a restaurant capable of seating 80-100 guests will be build. The existing buildings on the street will be divided into:
1.Museum, showing a typical 19th century home with all its locally made furnishings.
2.Small shops in which craftsmen will work and create Armenian crafts. These would include woodworkers, carpet weavers, knitters, textile makers, embroiderers, and more.
3.Small shops in which traditional Armenian food items will be prepared and sold, such as lavash, pastries, and other baked goods.
4.Small shops in which a variety of great Armenian crafts, as well as the best Armenian products (dairy, meat, preserves, wine and etc) will be sold.
5.A gallery area where a weekly regional art fair will be held or an annual art festival in which art from around the country will be displayed and sold.
