YEREVAN ZOO TO UNDERGO MAJOR RECONSTRUCTION NEXT YEAR
Arminfo, October 30
The Yerevan Zoo will undergo a major reconstruction next year with new specious cages to be built for felines and apes, its director Sahak Abovian, told Armenpress.
A natural gas system will be laid and many new trees will be planted. He said the government has released $2 million for the reconstruction.
The Yerevan Zoo was built 66 years ago and was one of the best zoos in the former Soviet Union. Despite a chain of hardships experienced in early 1990-s following the collapse of the former Soviet Union, it has recovered in the last several years and has acquired several animals. Overall it has 2,300 animals of 180 species. Around 60 percent of them are registered in the Red Book.
Mr. Abovian said zoos are very important in terms of preserving and ensuing reproduction of some species which are nearing the edge of extinction in wild life. The Yerevan Zoo has one such specie-it is Przhevalsky horse. Armenian bezoar (Capra aegagrus) and moufflon are being bred by the Zoo and released.
Within the frameworks of cooperation with WWF the Zoo has exchanged 10 bezoar goats for deer in neighboring Georgia.
In 1994 the Yerevan Zoo joined the Eurasian Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Association coordinates exchange of animals among zoos, information, new management experience and new animal treatment methods. The Yerevan Zoo cooperates also with several zoos in Europe.
The government has earmarked 200 million Drams as a subsidy to the Yerevan zoo for next year, up from 177 million this year. Mr. Sahakian said this sum is enough to meet all demands.

Noyan Tapan, October 29
The solo concert of Gurgen Dabaghian, a performer of folk songs, will be held in the Aram Khachatrian concert hall on November 8 after a five-year break. Folk and bard songs will be performed during the concert to the accompaniment of the Sayat Nova bard song ensemble and the Quartet of Duduks headed by duduk player Gevorg Dabaghian, the uncle of Gurgen Dabaghian.
"The reason of this silence of many years was the mutation period. However, I have never left music for these long years," the 19 year-old singer said at the press conference held on October 29. In his words, there will be no genre changes in his repertoire, he will keep to that genre, due to which he was loved and appreciated by people. Gurgen Dabaghian mentioned that he should do his best in order not to disappoint people, as well as to keep high "The Little Prince of Armenian Music" title, with which he was addressed years ago.
According to the young singer he is happy with the fact that love towards folk music is increasing day by day among the young. And he does not consider these young people as his rivals, he regards them as his friends, who like him are trying to promote the Armenian folk and bard music.
Gevorg Dabaghian mentioned that years ago numerous children followed the example of Gurgen and the folk music has started to prosper since those years. "I am sure that after the solo concert of Gurgen, many children will again follow his example. As for me, I am ready to help all of them to perform those songs in a proper way and at a high level," the duduk player declared.
